LSS “Vulcano” delivered to the Italian Navy after FOAR.

On 12th March 2021, OCCAR delivered the LSS “Vulcano” to the Italian Navy. Organised at the Muggiano shipyard in La Spezia, the OCCAR-EA Director, the OCCAR LSS Programme Manager, senior Italian Navy Officers, and senior representatives from Fincantieri and Leonardo companies attended the ceremony.

Prior to the handover ceremony, OCCAR-EA Director Matteo Bisceglia promulgated the FOAR completion of LSS “Vulcano ” on 11th March 2021.

The delivery of LSS “Vulcano” is an outstanding result, which was obtained thanks to the excellent working relationship between industries, the Italian Navy and the OCCAR LSS Programme Division. It will allow the ship to start a comprehensive dedicated training period for the crew.

This successful cooperation was referred to by all the speakers, including the OCCAR-EA Director. They outlined the key elements helping to achieve this success and to overcome the hurdles that all stakeholders had to face: the deep commitment from the industrial workforce, the Italian Navy and OCCAR’s best practice based on management effectiveness.

The ship was named after one of the Italian volcanoes, as the tradition goes for the Support ships of the Italian Navy – after Etna, Stromboli and Vesuvio.

ITS Vulcano is the first of five LSS ships to be produced, with four in order for France. Two additional ships should be ordered by Italy in a close future.

For France, the LSS “Jacques Chevallier” will be launched in March 2022. She will be delivered to the French Navy by the end of 2022. She is the second LSS to be built under the auspices of the French-Italian cooperation and the contractual framework of OCCAR.
