U212 NFS
The U212 NFS (Near Future Submarine) Programme is the most
advanced submarine project ever undertaken by Italy. Since 2021, it has been
managed by OCCAR, bringing together a clear governance structure and a
practical approach to handling complexity.
The Programme addresses a straightforward need: to operate
effectively in an increasingly demanding and evolving underwater environment,
ensuring surveillance, control and sea-denial where it matters.
The U212 NFS submarines are designed to cover a broad range
of missions, both nationally and in support of allied commitments, including
NATO and the European Union. This spans from traditional military tasks to the
protection of Sea Lines of Communication and Critical Underwater Infrastructure,
as well as seabed operations, counter-terrorism, intelligence, surveillance and
reconnaissance, deterrence and strategic strike roles.
Starting from the proven U212A class, the new submarines
introduce concrete improvements in endurance, operational effectiveness and
flexibility. These include an extended pressure hull, updated combat and
platform control systems, and solutions tailored for operations in warm waters.
Features such as electric hoistable masts, low-profile periscopes and
lithium-ion battery propulsion further enhance performance while reducing
detectability.
The weapon suite provides a solid underwater strike
capability and is supported by integrated countermeasure systems. At the same
time, the platform is designed with future upgrades in mind, including
long-range strike options.
Cybersecurity is treated as a built-in requirement,
alongside careful attention to human factors, to ensure both system resilience
and effective crew operation. The Programme also creates a basis for future
developments, including mid-life updates to the U212A Class, support to special
operations, and the integration of autonomous underwater vehicles.
The scope goes beyond the submarines themselves. It includes
a fully integrated training centre and activities to modernise supporting
infrastructure, aligned with the technological demands of the new class.
The Programme is currently in the production phase, with all
four submarines under construction.
