BOXER – THE NEXT GENERATION OF MULTI ROLE ARMOURED VEHICLES
The BOXER is an 8x8 all-terrain heavily armoured utility vehicle with a unique modular concept of a common drive module and an exchangeable mission module, making it a flexible military vehicle. This ensures maximum strategic and tactical mobility in a wide range of operational scenarios, so that BOXER can operate in high intensity conflict, in rapid reaction peace support and in humanitarian operations worldwide, offering improved capabilities and higher levels of performance and protection than other vehicles in its class.
Currently, the BOXER Programme provides the German, Netherlands, Lithuanian and United Kingdom (UK) Armies with a new generation of all-terrain armoured utility vehicles on the basis of balanced capabilities of transport capacity, mobility, protection, survivability, growth potential and efficient Life Cycle Costs.
To date, OCCAR has placed more than 1300 BOXER vehicles onto contract with ARTEC GmbH - joint venture of KNDS Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG, Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH and Rheinmetall Defence Nederland B.V. The first contract for series production was placed in December 2006 on behalf of DE and NL. Thereafter, OCCAR procured a further batch on behalf of DE in 2015. In total, all 605 DE and NL vehicles in 9 variants have been delivered and are undergoing retrofit and upgrade activities. Additionally, OCCAR is leading a BOXER Joint Fire Support design and development project on behalf of DE and which is expected to move into series production in 2027.
In 2016, Lithuania joined the Programme with a contract to buy 91 BOXER vehicles via OCCAR in 5 different variants on the basis of the DE vehicle design. The first vehicles were delivered in 2019, and final delivery of series production vehicles including retrofit and trials concluded in early 2024. Further work is underway to progress weapon systems and logistic solutions.
In 2019, the UK joined the BOXER programme and will see 623 vehicles in 4 variants delivered. Prototype delivery has allowed customer trials to commence, with series production ramping up in 2024. Furthermore, the UK contract facilitated the opening of two new BOXER production facilities in the UK, expanding and strengthening the supply and production base for the benefit of the overall BOXER Programme.
Australia has also joined the BOXER Programme as an observer state, where information and lessons learned will be shared between nations for a cooperative relationship between all user nations of the BOXER vehicle.
Looking forward, OCCAR is now working with all Nations to procure and deliver additional BOXER vehicles, both in existing but also new, modern and advanced variants. This ensures that the BOXER capability continues to modernise and grow in flexibility to deliver critical defence outcomes and in order to adapt to the evolving global security environment.
