Muggiano (La
Spezia), Italy 05 June, 2024 - Following an invitation by the NFS Programme
Division, the representatives of the Steering Committee visited the FINCANTIERI
shipyard, where the first two U212 NFS are currently under construction. The
delegation was shown key workshops to understand the detailed processes of
constructing these advanced submarines.
The Steering
Committee consists of representatives from Italy, Germany, Portugal and Greece
as observer, aiming to find common ground in submarine logistics, operations,
research, development, and maintenance, promoting cooperation among these
nations.
During their
visit, OCCAR NFS Programme Staff Members showed the group the precise work
involved in bending, aligning, and welding the pressure and hydrodynamic hulls
of submarines. This critical component of submarine construction underscores
the shipyard's commitment to precision and safety, reinforcing Italy's
reputation for excellence in naval engineering and showcasing OCCAR's
outstanding capability to manage such complex projects.
The delegation
also visited the workshop where ITS Romei is undergoing a major overhaul. This
maintenance is essential for keeping the vessel ready for operation and
extending its service life. The delegation was impressed by the thorough
inspections and upgrades.
OCCAR had the
opportunity, with this visit, to highlight the FINCANTIERI shipyard's advanced
technological capabilities and its vital role in maintaining and enhancing
Italy's naval expertise. The delegation left with a deeper appreciation for the
skills and dedication of the workforce at FINCANTIERI and OCCAR's management
capabilities, reaffirming the importance of supporting and investing in the
defence Industry.
