Joint Stars Exercise 2025 Aster Test Firings

Capo San Lorenzo (Cagliari)/Italy – May 28, 2025: As part of an Italian interforce exercise, a number of Aster 30 firings were successfully performed with the SAMP/T system.

OCCAR provided support to Italy for the operation event thanks to the In-Service Support (ISS) Contracts placed on behalf of the participating Nations by the FSAF-PAAMS Programme Division. This ISS framework put in place with the Contractor EUROSAM and its members Thales and MBDA, allows the provision of the appropriate level of support during firing exercises performed by the National forces, when ground and naval Air Defence systems based on the Aster missiles, are deployed.

During this specific exercise, the capacity of the system to respond to an overlap of hybrid and conventional threats was tested. This test demonstrated the perfect integration and articulation of the SAMP/T counter-aircraft weapon system with different defence systems, simulating most recent types of operational engagements. The successful launch of several ASTER 30 B1 missiles against unmanned MIRAC targets further confirmed the performances of the SAMP/T system. The attendance of the OCCAR’s Programme Team during such operational firings always provides an opportunity to share direct feedback on the system with the end-user and it is highly useful for the improvement and sustainability of the legacy systems, plus preparation of new developments.
